The City of Raleigh unveiled a new augmented reality mural Tuesday that will celebrate the area's connection to esports and video gaming.

Raleigh native Taylor White created "8-bit to 5G" on the side of the City Center Parking Deck at 429 S. Wilmington St. The mural features a collage of shapes, characters and graphics that span early video gaming through the present.

While the physical mural is finished, the augmented reality portion should be viewable in a few weeks, organizers said.

People will be able to use their smartphones to snap a photo of a code on the mural, which will open a website where the mural can be viewed interactively. The interactive portion will change over time to help promote different esports and video game-related events in the area.

The design and installation for the mural was funded through a gift from Red Hat and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance via a City of Raleigh Impact Partner Grant.

White also painted the "Abstracted Motion" Google Fiber AR mural located on 410 South Salisbury St.

“As a Raleigh native, it’s an honor to be a part of the city's beautification efforts,” White said. “Especially with a gaming and esports theme, which is an integral part of Greater Raleigh’s DNA, has created thousands of jobs for the community, and will play an essential role in the region’s future growth.”
