The Wake County Board of Education has hired the North Carolina School Boards Association to conduct its search for their school system’s new superintendent.
That’s the first major move toward hiring a new leader for the state’s largest school system by the start of the next school year. Current Superintendent Catty Moore will retire July 1, after serving more than five years in the position and more than 30 years in the school system as a teacher and administrator.

The North Carolina School Boards Association will conduct the search for $21,500, with potential additional costs.
The search will start later this month and will include public and employee feedback on what to look for in a new superintendent.
The board plans to hire a new superintendent by the next school year.
To meet that deadline, the board is discussing condensing its timeline for the hiring process to ensure no candidates get snagged by another school board first.
The board will meet Friday to finalize the timeline, and the superintendent job will be posted shortly after that.
Several other North Carolina school systems and numerous others across the country are also looking for superintendents, as superintendent turnover rises. The Charlotte-Mecklenberg Board of Education is also looking for a superintendent, after terminating it superintendent in April 2022, and it just hired a search firm, as well.
The school board didn’t solicit bids from other groups and cited the Association’s low cost and history of doing this work before in Wake County as the reason for selecting the Association. The Association conducted the search that resulted in Moore’s hiring in 2018.
