Greensboro police provides update on search for people they say shot & killed an officer Saturday night

I first like to thank uh Mayor Vaughan for joining
us tonight
Uh as a representative here for the Greensboro City Council
this evening the Greensboro Police Department lost one of our
own
around four pm at the sheets located at 32 02
Sandy Ridge road
An off duty Greensboro police sergeant witnessed a crime occurring
The officer approached the suspects and was subsequently shot another
off duty Greensboro police officer and a Guilford County paramedic
were on scene and immediately rendered aid
The sergeant was trans transported to a local medical facility
where he succumbed to his injuries

He was a loving husband father son and brother with
22 years of service to the department in this community

We asked for prayers for the family of the fallen
officer and our Green in Greensboro PD family
We would like to thank all of the organizations and
leaders for offering condolences and assistance including Governor Cooper Guilford
County District Attorney's Office Secret Service FBI US Marshals A
TF DEA Sbishp Forsyth County Sheriff's office
Guilford County Sheriff's office Winston Salem Police Department and the
High point Police Department
We'd also like to express our appreciation to our community
community partners and other organizations that have offered their condolences
and support
We will not be releasing the officer's information at this
time out of respect for the family
This is an active and ongoing homicide investigation and more
information will be released in the coming days

Um I know this is heavy news
Uh Right now how are how are you um reacting
to this first I want to send condolences to the
family and to the GP D family
I am angry and I am sad and I think
those are feelings that are felt throughout this department and
throughout the city
they're gone
She's been there
We um we have lost uh another officer Jared Franks
years ago in the line of duty
This is the second I would call it line of
duty even though he was off duty
You know he excuse me No
Um you know I I know that his family they
need some time to really process what's happened
I think as a department in a city we need
the time to process what's happened
What do you have to say about the heroism of
the off duty officer stepping up to try to help
in that situation I I think the fact that there
was an officer and a paramedic on the scene um
was an amazing coincidence that they were able to render
aid
So I think we can all feel good that he
was able to get um medical treatment that he need
Unfortunately it wasn't enough
And how was it for you just moments ago hearing
Chief Thompson talk about this and choking her while trying
to talk about
Um you know this is difficult
This is one of the hardest things that I have
faced as mayor
Words are inadequate right now
There's really nothing I can say that's gonna give the
family or the officers any comfort
What happened today was a senseless act of violence
And we have to remember that and in regards to
those responsible I know it's under that police note
But you have to say in regards to the suspect
I I believe that GP D and the assisting agencies
need to do their investigation and we need to give
them the time and the space so they can get
that investigation correctly and that we can bring these people
to justice

By any chance would you happen to know if the
suspects had caught you Have you been able to make
contact with the family and extend your condolences No I
have not been able to make contact with them
I want to um to respect their time right now
That will come
Um I am heartbroken for them
Um But that will come at a later time
Is there anything you'd like to say to the residents
of Greensboro about the incidents that occurred today You know
I think it shows the dedication of our police officers
whether they are um on duty or off duty that
they are always focused on protecting our community and serving
our community
And I think he is a hero lines
I know it's still early but is the city planning
to do anything It is way too early
Um But yes I'm sure that there will be ample
opportunity
Is there anything else that your office can do to
um I guess support GP D at this point in
time you know we will make sure that GP D
has the resources that they need to follow through with
this investigation
And um you know we we hope also that the
District attorney and the judges that they will um get
the information that they need to make a successful prosecution
The the governor of the district attorney the FBI all
these different agencies came together in a very quick order
to show their support and and help during this
Um can you kind of speak to those efforts and
uh how proud you are of that happen You know
it's it's gratifying to hear um all of the agencies
come together and express their support and their condolences
Um You know I I think being a police officer
being a firefighter it's it's a very different profession
It is a lifestyle and it is an extended family
and I think we're seeing that in action now
