Nearly 2,000 NCDMV appointments canceled during global IT outage last week

The impact of a global cyber outage is lingering at the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.

DMV Communications Manager Marty Homan told WRAL News 1,894 appointments had to be canceled Friday morning due to the global IT outage.

According to Homan, 600 people waited until 1 p.m. and were able to be served before the office closed at 5 p.m. Others were able to use their appointments at locations with Saturday hours.

"We made arrangements with about 1,300 customers to come back at a time that worked for them," Homan said. "Anyone that may have slipped through the cracks can just reach out to us and we’ll find a time to work them in."

The outage, caused by a software update by CrowdStrike, a massive cybersecurity firm, hit industries across the world – including airlines, banks, health care and media broadcasters. In the Triangle, flights were delayed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, hospitals were impacted, and some gas stations were not able to accept credit cards.
