New 'Raise the Age' law goes into effect Dec. 1

A new state law will soon go into effect to combat teenage crime.

Across the Triad, officers said serious crimes committed by teens are on the rise. This includes armed robberies, serious assault, shooting into homes with people inside, and more.

Beginning Sunday, Dec. 1, individuals ages 16 to 17 years old who commit certain felonies will be charged as adults immediately. This includes in Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point, according to officers from each city.

Officers said they take protecting the community seriously and urge teenagers to not get caught up in crimes that could negatively affect their futures.
