Meredith layoffs: College budget balancing eliminates 6% of jobs

Meredith College in Raleigh eliminated 6% of its workforce as part of strategic budget cuts aimed at addressing financial challenges from economic and demographic shifts.

Some employees at Meredith College in Raleigh learned they would be laid off Tuesday, part of a budget balancing act, the school says.

"Like most colleges and universities in the nation, Meredith is facing financial pressures as a result of economic and demographic shifts," said Melyssa Allen, Meredith director of public relations.

She pointed out that the layoffs accounted for "approximately 6% of Meredith employees."

Allen continued, "No departments were eliminated. Reductions were made strategically in different campus departments. These difficult decisions were made for the good of the college as a whole."

As a private institution, Meredith's total budget is not available to the public. Allen did not say how much the cuts are expected to save.

According to U.S. News & World Report college rankings data, Meredith boasts small classes and a 10:1 student/faculty ratio. Full tuition and fees for the 2024-25 academic year amounted to $45,630.

The most recent Meredith Day fundraiser, in 2025, netted the college $1,634,211 from 2,706 donors.
