71-year-old man arrested after leading authorities on chase through Aberdeen, police say

According to the Aberdeen Police Department, officers were at the home of Joseph David Cheeks attempting to serve a warrant. Officers were let into the home, but did not find Cheeks inside. They eventually found him in his vehicle.

A 71-year-old man is in jail on Tuesday night after Aberdeen police officers said he led them on a chase through the town.

According to the Aberdeen Police Department, officers were at the home of Joseph David Cheeks attempting to serve a warrant. Police said officers were let into the home, but did not find Cheeks inside. They eventually found him in his vehicle.

When they asked Cheeks to get out of his vehicle, he refused and drove away. Officers and a deputy with the Moore County Sheriff's Office eventually caught up to Cheeks, but he refused to stop.

Aberdeen police officers said Cheeks committed various traffic violations while trying to get away, including swerving his vehicle to hit the Moore County deputy assisting police officers.

Officers eventually arrested Cheeks after he turned onto a dead-end road near Providence Place.

Cheeks was charged with felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle, felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, and several misdemeanors and traffic violations. He was also served with an unrelated warrant for communicating threats and misdemeanor assault on a female.

Cheeks is in jail under no bond.
