The town of Archer Lodge will soon change its weapon ordinances for public places.
The town council voted Tuesday night in favor of an ordinance regulating the possession of guns and other weapons on town-owned property.

During the meeting, Town Council Member Teresa Bruton said she did not believe the ordinance “wouldn’t stop someone from doing harm that wants to.”
Bruton said she believes the ordinance could penalize law-abiding citizens.
Mayor Pro-Tem Clyde Castleberry said the town should do what it can to help protect residents. He said he is not against guns, but “anything can happen” when it comes to having them.
Under the new ordinance, anyone with a valid concealed carry permit can legally carry a concealed handgun on town-owned property. However, open carry would be prohibited.
The ordinance prohibits the “open display of handguns” and knives with blades longer than three inches.
Violations could result in fines and, for repeat offenses, criminal charges:
- First offense: $100 civil penalty
- Second offense: $200 civil penalty
- Third and subsequent offenses: Class 3 misdemeanor
A person convicted of a Class 3 misdemeanor could face additional legal consequences.
