A Chatham County deputy is in the hospital after being shot during a standoff that turned into a hostage situation on Tuesday, the sheriff's office said.
The Chatham County Sheriff's Office said senior deputy Matthew Mitchell was shot in the arm and the leg by 50-year-old Kevin Dean Hammer during the incident in the 8200 block of Pittsboro Goldston Road.

The sheriff's office said the incident began as an armed standoff at a residence. They said deputies breached the home after they became concerned for the hostage's safety, adding that the hostage was rescued and Hammer died.
It is unclear how Hammer died.
Mitchell, a five-year deputy with the sheriff's office, was taken to the hospital for his injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Pittsboro Goldston Road was closed for several hours during the incident, and a portion of U.S. Highway 421 was closed while investigators worked in the area.
Hammer had charges pending in Lee, Moore, Randolph and Chatham counties at the time of his death. He was facing charges including resisting a public officer and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Hammer was also charged with a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats after he allegedly threatened an ex-girlfriend with a pistol and threatened to "beat up" a Chatham County deputy on Nov. 27, according to arrest warrants.
