Cary residents speak out against proposed tax increase in town budget

Demonstrators gathered outside the Cary Town Hall on Thursday protesting the town’s new proposed budget.

The proposed budget would include a property tax increase of $3.75. That would bring the rate to $37.75, which residents say could have a big effect.

“It’s tough,” said resident Mary Insprucker. “People are struggling to, you know, they have to decide, do I pay for food? Do I pay my taxes?”

She said this increase could be especially hard for seniors who may have lived in their home for a long time.

“That’s their life’s investment,” Insprucker continued. "And they’re in threat of losing it if they can’t pay their taxes.”

Another feedback session for the budget is scheduled for June 11 at 6:30 p.m.
