Thursday night, Cary Town Council will hold its only meeting in August after council members were met with demands to resign a month ago.
A 2,600-page state audit released in July uncovered years of questionable spending under former Town Manager Sean Stegall and raised concerns about the town’s financial oversight.

The report showed taxpayer money was used to pay for luxuries, including expensive hotel rooms and meals.
Days after the audit was released, the council held their first public meeting since the audit was released. Angry Cary residents packed council chambers and several people spoke publicly, demanding accountability. Some event called for council members to step down from their positions.

Town officials said efforts are underway to increase financial transparency and implement changes in response to the audit. Some council members have responded to WRAL’s questions about the calls for their resignations, while others have not.
