A child has died in a drowning at a pond in Zebulon.

Police officers and firefighters arrived at a drowning call on Randwick Valley Court on Wednesday around 6 p.m. The 6-year-old had been pulled from a pond by the time they arrived.

After officers and firefighters tried to resuscitate the child, the child was taken to the hospital.

Thursday morning, police said the child died from their injuries.

The pond is located along NC Highway 39.

"The Zebulon Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family and all those affected by this tragedy," Zebulon police said. "We ask the community to keep them in your prayers and stand with them during this difficult time."

The child's name was not released. An investigation is ongoing.
