The city of Durham is embarking on a transformative $26 million renovation project at the Durham Station Transportation Center, set to begin on Monday. This project is a significant development for the thousands of residents who rely on the station daily, with approximately 14,000 bus riders currently using this crucial downtown hub.
The construction, which is slated to start at the end of this month, aims to enhance the user experience significantly and is expected to reach completion by December 2026.

The comprehensive upgrades are designed to improve various aspects of the transportation center, focusing on increasing capacity and providing more convenience and safety for its users.
The project is paid for by federal and local funding: $10.8 million from a Federal Transit Administration award, $1.7 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and a $13.5 million local match funded through the Durham County Transit plan.
The renovation will bring tangible improvements for passengers, such as expanded canopies that offer better protection from the elements, additional restrooms, and increased seating. A new customer service and security kiosk will also be established to ensure a safer and more accommodating environment for all commuters.
The number of bus bays will increase from 20 to 28, offering more space to accommodate the growing demand and supporting the heavier electric buses with reinforced bus loops.
The project also includes the relocation of the kiss-and-ride area, a move aimed at making drop-offs and pick-ups more convenient and secure for passengers.
Throughout the duration of the construction, the Durham Station Transportation Center will remain open and fully operational, ensuring that the daily routines of its riders are not disrupted.
