An electric bike rider was seriously hurt after colliding with a car in Apex on Saturday.
According to Apex police, officers and fire crews responded to a serious crash involving an e-bike and car on East Williams Street. The rider suffered "significant injuries," and the car had front-end and windshield damage.

Police did not say how the crash happened exactly, but warned e-bike riders to understand the risk of riding on busy streets.
"Electric bikes are increasingly common, but not every electric two-wheeled vehicle is legally considered an e-bike. Depending on its speed, power and design, it may be classified as a moped or motorcycle, with different laws, licensing and safety requirements," police said. "No matter the classification, riders have far less protection than someone inside a vehicle. Even at lower speeds, a collision can cause severe or deadly injuries."
Police said drivers should also remain alert and slow down for riders.
The department provided the following tips for safely riding an e-bike:
- Know how your vehicle is classified and understand the laws that apply.
- Wear a properly fitted helmet and securely fasten the chin strap every time.
- Follow traffic laws and use extra caution when entering or crossing a roadway.
- Ride as though drivers may not see you.
"Knowing what you’re riding is the first step. Understanding the risk, and riding accordingly, can save your life," police said.
