Police on Monday said they are charging a man with multiple murders after an altercation ended with three people dead and the suspect seriously injured.

Officers were called to reports of a shooting around 9:35 p.m. on Sunday at a home in the 5200 block North Sumac Circle. Police said a preliminary investigation determined that Cheri Smith, 50, her son, Erin Poole, 29, and her daughter Amanda Smith, 23, were inside their home when Nijyle Lewis, 25, who police said was a known associate of Cheri Smith, got into an altercation.

During the altercation, police said multiple shots were fired and Lewis was stabbed. Lewis, suffering from multiple stab wounds, ran to a nearby home to call 911.

When police arrived, officers said they found a Cheri Smith and her two adult children. Cheri Smith and Poole died at the scene. Amanda Smith was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Police officers found Lewis outside a neighbor's home. EMS took Lewis to a local hospital, where he's in stable condition.

Police said they charged Lewis with three counts of first-degree murder, adding that they are still reviewing witness statements, video surveillance footage and 911 calls.
