Granville County officials are now urging residents to ensure that their pets are up to date on their rabies vaccines after a fox tested positive for the virus last Thursday.
According to Granville County Animal Management, Animal Control picked up the fox on Sunset Drive near Old North Carolina Highway 75 in Stem.

State law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets to get vaccinated for rabies and to remain up to date on the vaccination. The Granville County Animal Shelter offers the vaccines for $10 each. They are administered Tuesday through Friday from noon. to 4:30 p.m.

County health leaders have provided the following general tips to help minimize rabies risk:
- Residents should not approach animals that they do not know.
- Residents should ensure their pets have a current rabies vaccination. If a pet is allowed outside, a booster vaccine is recommended. Outdoor pets should be kept inside until they receive booster vaccines.
- Do not feed stray or unknown animals, including cats and dogs.
- Do not leave trash or food outside unless it is in a trash can with a tight-fitting lid.
- If a pet is fed outside, do not leave food out overnight.
- If a pet comes in contact with an animal that might be rabid, contact a veterinarian immediately
