Gas leak closes road in Fayetteville for 24 hours, county officials say

A gas leak is to close a road in Fayetteville for 24 hours, according to Cumberland County officials.

Emergency crews responded to a natural gas leak in the area of Camden Road near Rockfish Road after a construction crew struck a natural gas line Wednesday morning. 

Road closures began at 10:38 a.m. Cumberland County officials said that out of precaution, Camden Road is closed between Rockfish Road and Wipperwill Drive, and is expected to remain closed for about 24 hours while crews work to repair the line. 

Emergency personnel evacuated several households in the immediate area, and some residents are temporarily sheltering in place. All affected individuals were notified. 

Hazmat teams are on scene, and current air-quality readings remain safe, according to Cumberland County. 

Due to wind conditions, the odor of natural gas may be noticeable in the surrounding areas. Officials emphasize that emergency crews are actively monitoring the leak and that the odor alone does not indicate danger.  

Cumberland County Emergency Services was in contact with Cumberland County Schools to ensure appropriate notifications are made regarding nearby campuses.

Residents are encouraged to avoid the Camden Road corridor until further notice and to follow guidance from emergency personnel in the area. Updates will be shared on the Cumberland County website.
