Gas leak forces about 40 people to leave Durham day care facility

A gas leak has prompted about 40 people to leave a day care on Monday afternoon, the Durham Fire Department said.

The Durham Fire Department said Liberty Street will remain closed between Alston Avenue and Hyde Park Avenue until the gas company repairs the leak.

The people forced to leave the day care – comprised of students and day care workers – to an offsite location, according to the fire department.

The gas company stopped the leak Monday evening, the fire department said.

Durham firefighters cleared the area by 5 p.m. Monday.
