State workers received notice of the rally and were encouraged to leave by 4 p.m. Thursday.
Thursday’s rally is to protest House Bill 958.
The bill states, “No person while serving on the State or County Boards of Elections shall make written or oral statements intended for general distribution or dissemination to the public at large encouraging or promoting voter turnout in any election.”
The bill could also ban ranked choice voting and convert some of the non-partisan civil servants in the State Board of Elections' office into political appointees.
Opponents of the bill claim, “North Carolina Republicans are trying to make it illegal for elections officials to encourage people to vote.”
"I don't wat to feel hopeless, I want to fight," said Raleigh resident and Vietnam veteran William Wise. "What else can we do? We can't vote right now, but we can show what we feel and we can fight. This is one way to fight it."
In June, downtown Raleigh had anti-United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] rallies along with "No Kings" protests.
