Attorneys for a private security company named in a civil case in the 2022 Hedingham mass shooting in Raleigh are calling for physical proof they say they haven't received from survivors who filed the lawsuit.
On Oct. 13, 2022, Austin Thompson, then 15, shot and killed his brother inside the family home, then roamed through the neighborhood and onto the Neuse River Greenway, killing four others and wounding two more. He was convicted in February 2026 of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole.

His father, Alan Thompson, pleaded guilty to a charge related to improper gun storage in 2024.
The civil case names the shooter and his parents and includes four wrongful-death claims and two catastrophic-injury claims. Hedingham Community Association, Capitol Special Police and one of its security officers, Nicole Locke, and H.R.W. Inc. are also named in the filing.
The latest motion in June was filed by Capitol Special Police. The LLC's lawyers said they aren't getting the information they've asked for from the victims, so they've called for a hearing in July in front of Wake County Superior Court Judge Vince Rozier.
Attorneys for Capitol Special Police said they asked for documentation proving damages suffered by victims that they have yet to receive. That includes proof of loss of services and income, tax returns, as well as pain and suffering claims and information about their social media accounts.
They want the plaintiffs to share that information and cover the attorney's fees. A hearing on this motion is set for July 6 at 10 a.m.
Attorneys for the two survivors and the victims' families filed a motion roughly two months ago for partial summary judgment, alleging the the security officer failed to protect the community by arriving late to her shift and delaying a 911 call after reports of gunfire.
The civil trial was set to start on July 6, but a motion filed on April 28 requested it be continued on Jan. 11, 2027, to allow for additional time for discovery and a chance to discuss "further settlement opportunities."
