A Johnston County social services employee was sentenced to prison for stealing over $100,000 from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
According to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Shermeca McCrary used her position and privileges as an N.C. Department of Social Services case worker to access the accounts of people receiving SNAP benefits.

McCray is accused of taking the money from the program for her own personal benefit and use.
She was sentenced to six months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release and to pay a Forfeiture Money Judgment of $102,000.
SNAP benefits are administered by the United States Department of Agriculture and managed by he North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and county Division of Social Services.
