North Carolina drivers without a REAL ID can now renew their driver's license online for a second consecutive time.
The change, which is effective immediately, comes from Senate Bill 245, which Gov. Josh Stein signed into law last week. The change applies only to driver licenses that are not REAL IDs, and not to REAL ID licenses or State ID cards.

A DMV spokesman told WRAL News on Tuesday that an estimated 44 percent of North Carolina driver licenses are not REAL ID and thus are eligible for online renewal.
"We encourage our customers to renew their driver license online if they’re eligible. It’s fast, easy, and helps reduce wait times at our offices,” DMV Commissioner Paul Tine said “By choosing online services, you’re freeing up space for those who need in-person assistance.”
The bill also eases a law allowing new drivers to document their driving practice hours and submit logs to the state.
It will also allow teen drivers to soon be able to upgrade from a Level 2 Limited Provisional License to a Level 3 Full Provisional License online.
WRAL News has previously reported the long wait times at DMV offices across the state as locations struggle to keep up with the demand of residents needing services. Commissioner Tine has promised to significantly reduce wait times and improve customer experiences.
