A person died after a crash involving a motorcycle in Sampson County on Wednesday.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol was called to reports of a crash around 12:06 p.m. on NC-55 near Green Path Road.

After investigating, troopers said an SUV was driving west on NC-55 and attempted to make a U-turn. At the same time, troopers said a motorcycle was driving East on NC-55 behind a pilot vehicle associated with roadway construction.

As the pilot vehicle slowed/stopped in the roadway, troopers said the motorcyclist passed the pilot vehicle and accelerated. The motorcyclist was then hit by the SUV and thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcyclist died at the scene, troopers said.

Troopers said the driver of the SUV moved from the roadway following the crash, and the motorcycle came to a stop in the right shoulder.

Troopers have not identified anyone involved in the crash. The investigation is still ongoing.
