A new fee will appear on Raleigh water bills starting Tuesday for people that pay with a card or digital wallet.
The city sent out notifications to customers throughout August about the new fee. It said it will begin including a 3% processing fee on any bills paid with a credit card, debit card or digital wallet such as PayPal.

People that pay online directly from their bank account, check or cash won't be charged the new fee.
The city said the charges are coming from credit card companies and not from the city. It also said the fee may change over time depending on the processing fee set by the payment processor.
"The city works hard with our payment vendor to negotiate the lowest possible rates based on industry standards, ensuring the process is as affordable as possible for those who choose to pay by card," it said.
