The Vance County Board of Commissioners voted on Monday to approve the rezoning of land that could be used to develop a data center.

The board voted 6-1 in favor of the rezoning request near Henderson. The developer, Natelli Investments, wanted a piece of land along U.S. 158 to be rezoned.

Natelli Investments has not confirmed the rezoning is for a data center project. However, Natelli Investments is the same developer that proposed a data center in Apex before scrapping plans.

On Monday, several people yelled at Vance County commissioners for their vote to approve the rezoning.

“You just sold out. I’m leaving. I’m leaving,” one woman yelled on Monday at Vance County commissioners. “But shame on all of you and every single one of you up here.”

People attending Monday’s meeting applauded the woman’s plea.

“We have had enough, and y’all talking about putting another one up in this town?” the woman yelled.

Someone on behalf of the board asked the woman to leave for the special meeting.

Another person attending Monday’s meeting yelled “boo!” after the commissioners adjourned Monday’s special meeting.

Someone else asked the commissioners to turn up the volume on the microphones.

Another person asked the commissioners to specify who voted in favor of the rezoning and the lone vote against it. The commission declined, citing that it was not “appropriate.”

The commission then began its work session.

Last week, Apex leaders voted in favor of putting a temporary, one-year suspension on a proposed data center development.

Other municipalities in central North Carolina are moving forward with plans to develop data centers.

Wendell held a public hearing on a moratorium for the facilities last week. In March, the Wake County Board of Commissioners talked about leading entities in plans and resources for data center developments.
