A new library is one step closer to coming to the Apex Friendship area.
On Monday, Wake County commissioners voted to purchase 7.5 acres at the intersection of Humie Olive Road and Old U.S. Highway 1 for Friendship Community Library’s future home.

“This action moves us significantly closer to expanding library services in a fast-growing part of the county,” said Susan Evans, chair of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. “We’re committed to expanding access to high-quality library services, and this new library will help us reach more residents with the resources and programming they need.”
The location was chosen based on its size, zoning, environmental sustainability, and proximity to infrastructure like water and sewer services, according to town of Apex officials. Officials also said the library will provide access to the growing Apex Friendship community and align with the County’s goal of geographic equity in library service.
The library will feature a diverse collection of 24,000 to 44,000 books, public computers, free Wi-Fi, and a large multipurpose room for youth and adult programs. The library is set to open in 2029 and will be funded by the 2024 voter-approved bond.
It is one of the two new facilities in the county’s updated 2024 Library Growth Plan that aims to ensure all residents live within a 10-minute drive of a library.
Voters approved a $142 million bond in November 2024, supporting the construction of new libraries and improving existing ones.
The other library will be built in Rolesville, the only municipality in Wake County without a library.
