A woman is facing multiple charges after a crash on Friday afternoon along Interstate 95 South near exit 95 in Smithfield.

Prior to the crash, two cars and a pickup truck were stopped on the shoulder of I-95 to change a flat tire, witnesses told WRAL News.

According to the witness, a fourth car was going southbound on I-95 at a fast pace and rear-ended one of the stopped vehicles and seriously injured one of the bystanders.

Warrants said the driver of the vehicle was Makayli Pierce, 22, of Wendell.

Pierce was charged with felony serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without insurance, no operator’s license, and failure to maintain lane control according to the arrest warrant.

Authorities are holding Pierce in the Johnston County Jail on a $40,000 bond.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
