WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing a major upgrade to the airspace over Wilmington International Airport, a change designed to make flights in and out of ILM safer.
Under the proposed upgrade, the controlled zone would double in size, expanding from five to ten nautical miles. The upgrade would require pilots to communicate with air traffic control, which is currently optional.

ILM airport spokesperson Erin McNally said the change would have little effect on the average passenger.
“For a typical traveler, a potential change to airspace classification would not affect the travel experience,” she said.
The proposal will advance to the federal rule making process on Sept. 3.
