It's a sign of the times for the expanding ACC.
NC State and Virginia, traditional ACC rivals, will play a non-conference home-and-home football series in 2025 and 2026.

The ACC is adding Cal, SMU and Stanford this summer, giving the league 17 football-playing members and forcing big changes to the league's scheduling format.
NC State and Virginia are scheduled to meet in 2027 and 2029 in conference games.
This isn't the first time local ACC teams have gotten creative with scheduling to play familiar foes. Wake Forest and North Carolina met in 2019 and 2021 in non-conference games.
The Wolfpack and the Cavaliers have played 11 times since 2000, most recently this past season in Charlottesville. NC State has won three straight against Virginia and five of the last six since 2007.
NC State already had four scheduled non-conference games scheduled for 2025 and 2026, which along with eight conference games completes the team's schedule.
In 2025, the Wolfpack are scheduled to play East Carolina, at App State, Campbell and at Notre Dame. In 2026, the Wolfpack are scheduled to play Florida, Richmond, at Vanderbilt and App State.
NC State opens its season this year on Aug. 29 against Western Carolina. The Wolfpack will face both Cal and Stanford in ACC games, in addition to Clemson, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Duke, Georgia Tech and North Carolina.
NC State's Sept. 7 game against Tennessee in Charlotte will kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
