A 15-year-old Hoke County High School student died in a drowning off the coast at Myrtle Beach last weekend.

The body of Edwin Gonzalez-Rosendo was found Sunday, Aug. 25, near 18th Avenue South, according to the Horry County Coroner’s Office. His remains washed ashore after 6:30 p.m.

“We’re thankful that at least we got his body back. Not the way we wanted to, but at least we have this and we have closure now,” his sister, Jazmin Gonzalez-Rosendo, told WMBF. Jazmin said Edwin had a cheerful nature and enjoyed playing soccer. He was a rising ninth grader at HCHS.

Hoke County Schools released a statement on the matter.

Hoke County Schools joins our community in mourning the loss of our student, Edwin Gonzalez-Rosendo who passed away in Myrtle Beach, SC last weekend. Edwin was a rising 9th grader at Hoke County High School. This is a great loss for our entire district family. We offer our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and the HCHS community in their time of need.

The family started a GoFundMe for funeral expenses.
