In an ongoing effort to address the critical issue of falls among older adults, the town of Wake Forest is recognizing the 17th annual National Falls Prevention Awareness Week.

As part of the initiative, the Northern Wake Senior Center hosted a Falls Prevention Awareness Day on Tuesday, bringing together caregivers, professionals and seniors to educate the community on fall prevention strategies.

Attendees received valuable insights into key preventive measures, including balance exercises, medication management, vision check-ups and home safety modifications.

The event aligns with the National Falls Free Initiative, a movement dedicated to reducing the occurrence and severity of falls among older adults.

Falls remain the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries for individuals aged 65 and older. Each year, one in four seniors experiences a fall, resulting in more than 3 million emergency room visits and 800,000 hospitalizations across the U.S.

Sadly, more than 32,000 older adults die each year from fall-related injuries.

Beyond the physical toll, the financial impact is staggering, with nonfatal injuries costing over $50 billion annually and fatal falls adding another $754 million. North Carolina's statistics are particularly concerning, with nearly 29% of residents aged 65 and older reporting a fall.
