The remains of a World War II Lt. from eastern Carolina have been recovered and identified after the plane he was on was shot down in Germany in 1944.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) said Tuesday that U.S. Army Air Force 2nd Lt. John H. Harris, 23, of Roanoke Rapids, who was killed during World War II, was accounted for June 20, 2024.

His family recently received a full briefing on the identification.
Scientists used anthropological and dental analysis and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis to identify Harris.
Harris will be buried in Columbia, South Carolina, on Nov. 19.
