National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day: Finding furry friends a forever home

Today is all about celebrating the joy that shelter animals bring into our lives and encouraging everyone to consider adoption when looking for a new family member.

Today is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day and if

you're considering becoming a pet parent or adding another pet

to your family there are some important things you should

know

For example it's important to give any pet from the

shelter time to acclimate to their new home

Some may have past trauma and need some extra time

to feel safe in this new home

Those pets may enjoy having their own safe space like

a crate to eat and sleep in for a time

There are also some perks to choosing a shelter pet

From my perspective as a veterinarian I love that we

are adopting pets that come from shelter because they do

come with proper medical records so you know that their

vaccination is completed you know that they've been neutered or

they have been spayed

Now if you already have animals at home that's advised

socializing them with the new pet through the closed doors

at first and that way they can get familiar with

their smells and sounds before they
