North Carolina students are continuing to perform better on state tests.
They posted increases of multiple percentage points in proficiency rates across all subject areas this spring, according to new data from the state Department of Public Instruction.

Students in third through eighth grades take math and reading tests. Fifth- and eighth-grade students take science tests.
At the high school level, some students take Math 1, Math 3, English II and Biology.
Science tests changed in 2025 after the state updated its standards. North Carolina Department of Public Instruction officials say the new science standards are more rigorous and include more expectations for student learning. That means the 2025 and 2026 science test results can’t be compared with older results on an apples-to-apples basis.
