The Triangle Esports Championship has announced that its inaugural event will donate all proceeds to local charities.
The gaming tournament, planned Feb. 10 at the Durham Armory, features a $10,000 Fortnite Battle Royale. There will also be other Fortnite and Rocket League tournaments, a Playstation Fighting Games showcase and a Smash Bros Ultimate Grudge Match between UNC and Duke students.

Popular gamers Jeremiah Woodward (Jpw03) and Jerome Porter Jr. (Sk1nyman) plan to live stream from the event.
The Triangle Esports Championship, which is hosted by the Kramden Institute and Triangle Literacy Council, will be giving back proceeds to both organizations.
“We are so excited to bring this competitive and fun new event to Durham and the Triangle region,” Triangle Literacy Council President and CEO Laura Walters said. “The Triangle Literacy Council and Kramden Institute are long-time partners providing digital and literacy resources to the community to improve educational, workforce and life skills development. The proceeds from this event will allow us to expand our services and provide more opportunities for adults, youth and children in our community to flourish.”
Tickets for the event are on sale now. General admission tickets are $25. VIP tickets, which include a T-shirt and swag bag, are $65.
Registration for the Fortnite Battle Royale tournament is open now. The entry fee is $1,000 per four-person team. The tournament will include up to 25 teams competing for cash prizes - $6,500 for first place, $2,500 for second place and $1,000 for third place.
Capitol Broadcasting Company, which also owns WRAL, is a sponsor of the Triangle Esports Championship.
“Our company wants to encourage these public esports events. So many game developers live and work in the Triangle. It’s an online phenomenon, but we should gather, celebrate their work and enjoy the competition,” Capitol Broadcasting Company VP/Special Projects George Habel said.
